Steve Cauthen was a tremendous jockey who rose to fame in 1977, in only his second year of riding, leading the nation in race wins with 487. In 1977, he won the Eclipse Award for outstanding jockey, and was named Sportsman of the Year by Sports Illustrated. He was also named ABC's Wide World of Sports Athlete of the Year. In 1978, Steve Cauthen became the youngest jockey to ever win the U.S. Triple Crown, riding Affirmed to victories in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes. The Triple Crown has only been won 11 times since it was ordained in 1923, and Steve Cauthen and Affirmed were the last to win it in 1978. In 1979, Steve Cauthen moved to England, where he was named the British Champion Jockey in 1984, 1985 and 1987. In 1984, he also won the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Trophy and in 1994, Steve Cauthen was inducted into The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.
