Bernie Geoffrion, known as "Boom Boom" for his thundering slap-shot, began his NHL career with the Montreal Canadiens in 1950, and he played with them for the next 14 seasons, before going to the New York Rangers where he played until his retirement in 1968. The 1951 Calder Memorial Trophy winner as Rookie of the Year, the 11 time All-Star also won the Art Ross Trophy twice as the NHL's top scorer, and the Hart Memorial Trophy in 1961 as the NHL's MVP. Boom Boom was only the 2nd player ever to score 50 goals in a season, and he helped the Montreal Canadiens to win 6 Stanley Cup Championships during his career with them. Known for his rough play, Boom Boom broke his nose on the ice 6 times and received over 400 stitches. Bernie Geoffrion's jersey #5 was retired by the Montreal Canadiens on March 11, 2006, unfortunately the day he died. The date was exactly 10 years after the Montreal Forum closed it doors in 1996 and exactly 69 years after his father-in-law, Montreal's legendary Howie Mrenz, had his funeral at the Montreal Forum making March 11 one of the saddest days to Montreal Canadiens fans. In 1972, Boom Boom Geoffrion was recognized as one of the greatest players of all-time as he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
